“Gladiator” is a textbook example of a historical epic done well. Swayze and Reeves demonstrate phenomenal chemistry, and surfing has never looked cooler on the big screen. If that logline doesn’t embody early 1990s coolness, nothing does. Keanu Reeves stars as an FBI agent who goes undercover in the surfing community to befriend a group of bank robbers, led by a charming criminal played by Patrick Swayze. Kathryn Bigelow’s action thriller may have inspired a lackluster 2015 remake, but the original film remains a classic for a reason. “Ocean’s 11” launched a franchise that never seems to die, but the first film remains essential viewing. The twisty plot offers just as much pulpy fun now as it did when the film hit theaters in 2001, and the star-studded supporting cast hasn’t lost any of its charm. George Clooney oozes charisma in the role he was born to play: a charismatic thief who assembles an elite crew of specialists to rob three Las Vegas casinos at the same time. Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer star as two men who engage in a forbidden love affair with long term consequences while Hammer works as a research assistant for Chalamet’s father over the course of a summer in Italy. The final entry in Luca Guadagnino’s loosely-connected Desire Trilogy, “Call Me By Your Name” remains a stunning portrait of forbidden love. This month’s offerings lean more towards slick entertainment than high art, but there are plenty of gems that will entertain even the most discerning of cinephiles. In addition to its high profile originals, the streaming service is once again rolling out a stacked collection of existing films. “All Quiet on the Western Front,” on the other hand, gives Erich Maria Remarque’s legendary WWI novel the cinematic treatment, portraying the war in all of its brutality. Netflix’s October original film offerings are dominated by two movies at opposite ends of the spectrum: Henry Selick’s “Wendell & Wild” and Edward Berger’s “All Quiet on the Western Front.” The former sees the legendary stop motion artist behind “The Nightmare Before Christmas” directing his first feature film since 2009’s “Coraline.” The film features former comedy partners Keegan Michael-Key and Jordan Peele voicing a pair of mischievous demons who team up with a teenage girl in their attempts to reach the land of the living.
